The Philippine Dental Association (PDA) is a scientific association in the Philippines. It has been an Accredited Professional Organization by Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) since 13 August 1975.
The organization is a union with two major dental organizations, the National Dental Association of the Philippines and the Sociedad Dental de Filipinas. It is affiliated with the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET), Philippine Nurses Association (PNA), and other health organizations in the country.
History
It was the first dental association in the Philippines and was used to be called Sociedad Dental de Filipinas and was founded in 1908 by Doctor Bonifacio Arevalo. According to the PDA website "...when the United States and Armed Forces Liberated the Philippines, dentists began to be active again and the two organizations that existed before the war were finally unified and the Philippine Dental Association was born." In an instant, it has gained nationwide recognition as shown in the great increase in its membership. To impart new dental practice in the Philippines, the dental officers of the Armed Forces of the United States and the Philippines started joining the annual conventions of the PDA in 1953.
Achievements
It has made major campaigns to amend the law on dental practice and to strengthen and improve the Regulatory Code of Ethics of dentists, along with the Professional Regulation Commission and the Board of Dentistry. It has led to the foundation of the Asian-Pacific Dental Federation (APDF) wherein, PDA President Dr. Bienvenido EraƱa was elected head. The PDA then ventures the affiliation of APDF to the Federation Dentaire Internationale. The PDA has also been a active in world affairs and conferences concerning dental health and practice. So as to provide and improve dental health care in remote communities, it has expanded it programs to “Adopt-a-Barangay Project” and the “Adopt-a-Primary/ Elementary School Program”.
